WE CAME AS ROMANS – “TWO HANDS”

Music Video Directed By

Orie McGinness & Enlighten Creative Studio

Overview:

Mood/Vibe:

Cinematic, stable, artistic. We will emote a clean and intentional aesthetic throughout all performance and narrative shots.

Initial thoughts:

The songs chorus gives an atmospheric vibe that will allow longer cuts and wider shots of the full band as they play along. Camera motion will need to stay tight and stable to match the mood that is portrayed with the music.

Characters to portray:

  • A man in his early 30's, playing two roles. One of which being the "good" version of himself. The other being the "bad".

Plot Outline:

Scene Option 1:

We intro with ground-level and arial shots of a forrest to establish the scene. Slowly, shots of a man running through the woods are introduced. These shots begin close and somewhat confusing until we ultimately reveal that there is a man charging full speed through the trees, seemingly being chased by something unknown to the audience. He runs as fast as he can, frequently trips over debris/brush in the woods, and looks back over his shoulder every few seconds to see if what is chasing him has given up yet. Eventually, we reveal that what is chasing him is a much more sinister version of himself. (This is to represent the metaphorical internal demons that everyone deals with and everyone also tries to escape from.) The man is shown trying to escape this version of himself throughout the video until we get to the bridge of the song. On the bridge, we see the man that is running look back over his shoulder one last time. As he's running, he turns his head back facing forward only to reveal the "bad" version of himself blocking his way, holding a large spear sticking straight out anticipating the man running into it. With less than a second to react, the "good" version ends up running his torso directly into the spear. The "bad" version physically lifts the "good" version off the ground with the spear and then slams him to the ground and watches him bleed out. The "bad" version turns and walks away for a few moments. The camera flys backwards away from the scene as the bad version follows with a grim smirk on his face. Suddenly, we see a large spear emerge from his chest, his smirk drops to a worried and confused expression as he falls to his knees. We reveal the "good" version standing behind him, with a large gaping hole in his chest, heavily wounded. The "Good" version lay's the "bad" version down to the ground and walks back into the woods exhausted as we cut to black.

Scene Option 2:

We show metaphorical shots of the lyrics being played out by multiple actors on the white cyc wall.

Artist Performance:

Scene Option 1:

The band is shown performing deep in a heavily wooded forrest towards the end of the day with drums and cabs placed in the forrest as if they have been there for a period of time. The sun is low and shines through the trees. Smoke/fog continuously flows from the ground up to provide a hazy atmosphere throughout their performance shots.

Scene Option 2:

The band plays in front of an all white cyc wall with all muted colors (preferably dark to avoid the more cliche white-on-white aesthetic) Heavy lens flares will be used to cut/transition from members and scenes.

Colors to use:

Scene Option 1:

Vibrant greens and oranges with teal and orange shifts to the shadows and highlights to provide a clean cinematic look.

Scene Option 2:

Pale muted colors with the exception of a more saturated orange skin tone to pop the members from the rest of the room.

Edit Pace:

Cuts and camera motion will heavily rely on the pace/beat of the song. For faster/heavier parts we will show quicker cuts and more hectic camera motion. During the choruses we will show longer shots that focus more on stability and composition.

WE CAME AS ROMANS – “FOREIGN FIRE” OR "cold like war"

Music Video Directed By

Orie McGinness & Enlighten Creative Studio

Overview:

Mood/Vibe:

Cinematic, fast cutting hectic footage.

Initial thoughts:

The song has a strong rhythm to it which we will follow heavily with camera motion and editing.

Artist Performance:

Scene Option 1: The band plays on top of a large hill with a scenic wooded overlook behind them. The performance is captured right at sunrise to allow bright orange cinematic sun rays to shine into the camera lens.

Scene Option 2: The band plays in a barren desert at the end of the day. Members are widely spread out to allow the camera to fly quickly and smoothly between members.

Scene Option 3: Large dark open warehouse with wet concrete floors and walls. Flickering florescent lights will be seen above the band. Large red draping fabric will be hung from the ceiling and attached to the floor with some slack in the middle. Fans will be placed behind the sheets to have them blow in the wind during the takes.

Scene Option 4: The band is shown performing in a small, dark, cold looking room with concrete walls and floors. White florescent overhead light will be used to key the band. (Potential) wet floors and walls to add a reflective sheen to the overall video.

Colors to use:

Scene Option 1: Desaturated tones minus the orange from the sun.

Scene Option 2: Desaturated tones minus the orange from the sun.

Scene Option 3: Green tinted location, bright white florescent lights to key the band members. Teal and orange tinted shadows and highlights.

Scene Option 4: Blue, grey, white, and flashes of red.

B-Roll:

Scene Option 4: Symbolic visuals of war (Girl in a white dress releasing a dove, two similar looking individuals in a barren space fighting each other, snake moving around/in a human skull, a man holding an assault riffle, hands grabbing a TNT lever, macro shot pulling a pin from a grenade, super slow motion of fire combusting, embers flying through the air, smoke filling a room, smoke leaving someones mouth, blood dripping from someones mouth, dirt being smeared under someones eyes, etc)

Wardrobe:

Streetwear, leather, or peacoat looking jackets.

Edit Pace:

Fast moving stable camera motion for all three options. The goal would be to frequently shift from a super-wide frame to a tighter, almost medium cropped shot within the same shot before cutting to the next member.

WE CAME AS ROMANS – “LOST IN THE MOMENT”

Music Video Directed By

Orie McGinness & Enlighten Creative Studio

Overview:

Option 1:

Mood/Vibe: Bright, Vibrant, Cinematic

Characters to portray: Band members

Option 2:

Mood/Vibe: Cheerful, bright, colorful, cinematic

Characters to portray: Girl dancing on her way home from school

Option 3:

Mood/Vibe: Cinematic, gritty, dark, uplifting ending

Characters to portray: Abusive/Alcoholic Father, Daughter/Victim, Boyfriend/Hero

Plot Outline:

Option 1: The story follows the band exploring beautiful landscapes and scenic overviews around Los Angeles / Hollywood / Malibu / Other scenic areas around the LA area. The overall concept behind the shots is to capture beautiful landscape cinematography with the band walking/hanging out in frame. We will periodically cut to closer shots of the guys to showcase detail of their expressions, wardrobe, and actions. A drone will be utilized to provide wide cinematic establishing shots to show exactly what type of area the band is for the "ground level" shots. The use of the drone, color grading, and mood given off by the band members in these shots will ultimately convey a happy cheerful theme to the video as a whole. Some of these landscapes will include overlooks of the ocean, the Santa Monica Mountains, and other visually pleasing sites across Los Angeles.

Option 2: We intro the video following a girl/guy walking down the street on her way home from school in a somewhat rural area. Colors seem flat and dull and the scenery is somewhat bleak. A car drives by and we hear kids from their school yell out rude insults as they continue to speed away. The student looks bummed, but isn't terribly shaken by the event. The reach in their coat pocket and pull out an iPod or iPhone and begin to play the bands song “lost in the moment”. When the song begins, we see the colors of the location become more saturated and vibrant, things around them begin to seem much happier as a whole. The student ends up finding a path that leads them into a beautiful setting in the woods filled with bright natural sunlight and haze/fog and wanders off in to explore. They set their backpack down and begin to (professionally) dance along to the song with an elegant free-form style that seems interpretive to the beat of the song. Heavy use of slow motion will be used along with some speed ramping to accent certain hits in the versus and choruses. The catch is that her dancing will be very pro and the shots will transfer from being cheap and bleak feeling into something much more cinematic and uplifting. This continues through out the whole song as it switches back and forth from the band performance to the girl dancing. The girl finally dances through the front door of her house, walks past the band performing the living room, walks into her room, and falls back on her bed with a big smile on her face as the song ends and the screen fades to black.

Option 3: Girl lives at home with her alcoholic father who is verbally and physically abusive, and the only way she finds happiness is when she is with her boyfriend. Story starts off with the girl walking into her house where you see her father in a grease stained wife beater passed out on the couch with alcohol surrounding him. She goes to her room where you see her facetiming with her boyfriend smiling and laughing. Her dad barges in and starts yelling at her as he yanks her out of bed. Her phone falls to the floor and you see her boyfriend still on the line as the girls feet struggle in the background from being pushed around by her father. Cuts to the girl and boy the next day meeting up to go on a date where you see her all happy and joyful. During their date you see her phone going off from continuous calls from her father but she ignores the calls and turns her phone off. After the date ends she gets dropped off at home and she walks inside where her father is waiting for her at the dinner table with a bottle of alcohol in hand. He gets up and starts yelling at and hitting her, she hits him back and breaks free from his clutch. She runs to her room and locks the door as her father violently bangs on the door while yelling for her to open it. As she stands there starring at the door, petrified from fear and teary eyed, her boyfriend knocks on her window. She looks over and immediately becomes noticeably happy that he is there, he signals for her to climb out the window to run away from her abusive dad. She throws some things in a backpack and climbs out the window to embrace her boyfriend. Once she is out the window her father breaks in the door and sees that she escaped through the window. You see the couple running in slow motion towards the car as the dad scrambles through the house to get to the front door. Once he exit the house you see the boyfriends car peel off and drive away. The final shot is the girl and her boyfriend driving away laughing and smiling.

Artist Performance:

Option 1:

  - The band will be performing in front a cyc wall filled with warm vibrant colors reflecting the locations in the b-roll footage.

  - The band will be performing at one of the outdoor destinations shown in the b-roll around sunset to match the vibe of the song and colors shown.

Option 2: Band performance will take place in the girls house where she ends up. It will be a bright and colorful setting with many windows to allow for beautiful natural light to leak in. The vibe of the performance footage will match the upbeat cheerful vibe of the girl dancing through the streets. Towards the end of the song the girl will enter the house while dancing and pass the band performing in the living room on the way to her bedroom.

Option 3: Band performing in the same house that the alcoholic father & abused daughter live in. Cuts will appear to switch seamlessly as if the band is performing at the same time that the story is playing out. This performance scene plays out as one long sequence of cinemagraphs (Reference http://cinemagraphs.com/) We see multiple different poses and frames play out as the music video. So for each “Shot”, we will see one member in full motion, rocking along to the song, as the rest of the members are seemingly frozen in time. Shots could include: Everyone standing frozen mid posi- jump as the the drummer jams along to the song. Everyone frozen after a big drop/hit while vocals are still being sung into the mic.

Colors to use:

Option 1: Warm vibrant tones with sun flares to accent the upbeat mood

Option 2: Bright vibrant colors with warm light leaks.

Option 3: Desaturated cold tones inside house to match gritty vibe.

Edit Pace:

Cuts and camera motion will heavily rely on the pace/beat of the song. For faster/heavier parts we will show quicker cuts and more hectic camera motion. During the choruses we will show longer shots that focus more on stability and composition.
